Chapter 9

Despite the odds, I managed to make it to Connor's door after only three moments of hesitation. In front of the disaster of my own making, my hands hung uselessly at my sides. I understood the necessity in the apology, but I couldn't help to think that this apology could very quickly go south.

If he was indeed mad at my cruel actions against Naomi, I wasn't really sorry. I knew it was wrong to verbally attack her like that and try to embarrass her, but she had done the same to me. It wasn't like it had been one-sided. In fact, I realized with a sudden stubborn streak, she had won more of those arguments than I. Connor had cut me off from a potential—and desperately needed—win! I was just about decided to turn around and lie through my teeth to Felicity when the door swung open suddenly.

However, a boy I was not expecting appeared in the doorway. "Hello, Lady Isabella," Charlie said, flashing an insubordinate grin. I could see what Felicity liked about him. There was peacock-like confidence in his eyes that my sister always seemed to go for. Not to mention the fact that both always smiled like they were the smartest people in the room. No, I had a feeling it would be a short-lived pair, but fun while it lasted. Like the majority of her relationships.

"Hello, Carlos," I smirked as his eyes sparkled with a hint of irritation. Not enough fire to be dangerous, but just the right amount to warm my smile.

"Carlo," he corrected. Something in his light humor reminded me that he knew. The last time we'd spoken, he'd referred to the date that Mother allegedly lost her second child—Felicity's real date of birth. Did he know that the bastard child was Felicity? Or that I was illegitimate, too? I couldn't let him see how much the idea scared me.

"I know better than to think you're here to see me," he said, still smirking. "But if, or when, you do want to see me, just ring." Fire danced behind his dusty caramel lenses, daring me closer.

What do you mean? I wanted to ask, but the question was stuck on my tongue, alongside all the other questions I had for him.

Thankfully, or not—I couldn't decide—he ended our conversation before I could make a bigger fool of myself. "Your Highness, Lady Isabella Love is here ta' see you." He called, throwing the words back into Connor's bedroom. I realized belatedly that I had lost all chances at escape as a flash of emerald green eyes appeared in the doorway.

I spared a moment to toss daggers at Charlie's continual smile. He winked, unfazed, and used Connor's appearance to dismiss himself, leaving me to face Connor by myself.

"Thanks." I shot in Charlie's ear as he walked by, hoping he could recognize my sarcasm. He said nothing but brushed unnecessarily close to me. I almost said something else, if not for the piece of paper that was shoved into my hand at the last moment.
